Apple’s new patent is basically a giant flower pot

The design appears to be the one used at an Apple store in London.

Apple gets a lot of patents, like nearly 2,000 last year in the U.S. alone. And they aren’t all new iPhones or other high-tech gear. It also gets patents for chips and other components, tools it uses to make its products and even the fixtures in its stores.

Speaking of the latter, one of its just-granted awards did catch my eye. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company has been granted a design patent on a planter. Yep, the thing that you put trees and bushes in.

The application, made in 2015, was awarded patent status on Monday. It appears to be the design that Apple used inside its Regent Street store in London.

And lest you think coming up with a round planter design is easy, Apple’s patent lists 17 inventors, including Richard Howarth, the company’s head of industrial design.
