‘Hamilton’s’ diverse cast had a message for VP-elect Mike Pence: ‘Work on behalf of all of us’

Pence was booed as he arrived in the theater.

The cast of Hamilton put on quite a show Friday night on Broadway. But the real highlight happened after the performance was over and some in the crowd — namely VP-elect Mike Pence, who was booed when he entered the theater earlier that evening — were just getting up from their seats.

“We have a message for you, sir, and we hope that you will hear us out,” Brandon Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, called out to Pence before encouraging everyone to get out their phones to record his speech. “We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us.”

Video of the speech caught like wildfire online. Within two hours, the video had been retweeted from the official “Hamilton” Twitter account almost 40,000 times.

For those who haven’t been following, the speech was in direct response to President-elect Donald Trump’s list of appointed staff and cabinet members, which includes Steve Bannon, the chairman of ultra-conservative Breitbart News; Michael Flynn, well-known for being openly anti-Muslim and someone the New York Times called “an alarming pick for national security adviser”; and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, who was denied a federal judgeship on accusations of being a racist.

So, yeah, you can see why the cast of “Hamilton” did what it did.
